Primary problem statement

We would like to create a ceiling system working like a living organism, that can interact with human movement and the sound they produce. The ceiling will move like a living organism on its own when nobody is there. When someone enters the zone, the ceiling will start to interact with the body movement. The flower on the ceiling will open if that person does not produce large sound , so as to give a reward for being silence.

Testing Model

Benefits:

1. Minimum use of mechanism(motors and joint) -creating least amount of noise itself

2. Flexible -the outcome can be of different combination of geometry

3. Increase surface area to absorb the noise

Two responsive mechanism of the ceiling

  • 1. The folding of the ceiling will react to the body movement & sound
  • e.g. when people pass through the ceiling and make noise the ceiling will tend to wrap around the human body

  • 2. The flower opening on each panel react to silence
  • e.g. when there is silence, the flower opens as a reward

Improve the acoustic of the corridor

  • 1. Sound absorbing foam will be placed in between gaps of the panels so that it will absorb the noise made by the people passing the corridor

  • 2. The panel made of felt cloth will form a voronoi structure so as to facilitate sound absorption
